Safety at Work: a Boot on a String

posted on 8 January 2012

During the 1960s I worked in a "protective coating" plant in Houston Texas. Workers had to cross from one side to the other of tracks that transported huge pipes that had just been spray painted at 350 degrees Fahrenheit, and had to wear ppe clothing. The hot pipes, four or five feet in diameter, were transported via chains that ran along next to what looked like railroad tracks, and the workers ran back and forth along those tracks to check the temperatures. A worker across from me slipped as he ran his foot was trapped between the chains and the rails, and he was twirled around and around until someone pushed the emergency button, stopping the machinery. When they got him off the track, his bare toe bones were sticking out of the boot, which was torn to shreds. The next day when we reported for work, I saw that his empty, torn boot was hanging from a string with a warning note to workers to be careful. That was this Texas plant's safety program I guess. I resigned at the end of that day.

Make a Difference by Participating in a Clean Up Operation Today

posted on 19 December 2011

I have engaged in a massive clean up operation this holiday season. I am used to cleaning as I worked in tank cleaning services in the past, and there's something satisfying about cleaning that I love. Anyway, for this particular clean up, I got a group of friends together to clean up the local parklands. We started around 6am on Saturday morning. A few of us had hangovers however we managed to cope. Within a few hours we had filled piles of rubbish bags. I get rather upset when I find plastic bags as they can cause terrific damage to marine life. We also found a smart phone. Fortunately the owner came back for it. He was extremely grateful that we had found it. He was nice enough to cart away some of the rubbish in his truck. We decided to continue our clean up operation the following day. At the end of it we were worn out. I think we need more bins in parks and people should feel ashamed of themselves if they want to litter. They are damaging the environment and should start to care. We plan to have another clean up operation after the holiday period. There will probably be twice as much rubbish to pick up.

My Biggest Dream House Makeover by a Famous Interior Designer

posted on 3 November 2011

Our house is just a small bungalow (only ground floor) but with very interesting ambiance to live in. We use velcro tape fasteners for most things when we can to keep things light and easy. My family call this as home because we love to stay there together as a one whole family. To be more comfortable to stay in our home, I just want a major makeover in our home. Our home should be more be look like a cute and neat in the eye. I want to put furniture that best fit on it, but I don't want to move some important furniture that has a sentimental value to us. I also want a space for our business work. Our business is sewing some rugs and repairing some clothes, there should have a space in order for us not to place it in our sala or living room, where we usually placing them. I want also to have a double deck bed for us to have a less space consuming. I also want a better ventilation in order for us not to be suffocate. I also want a better bathroom with tiles floor and wall. I also want a place for my little library, because I have many books in Accounting, that is one of our major problem. And also I want that makeover be so less expensive for me to afford. And for the last I also want our home to have a second floor in order to make it as a room for rent in order for us to gain income every month. And these are my dream makeover in our home.

How To Scout For The Best Steel Building For Sale

posted on 1 June 2011

Buying a steel builing can sometimes be a more practical choice as compared to taking the time to construct one. It will definitely take a lot less time and it definitely will cost a lot less than constructing your own building. However, purchasing a steel buildings for sale doesn't mean that you should become complacent. Just because it's already been built, doesn't mean that there are possibly some flaws to its design or some things that may need to be fixed. It would be a very foolish move to buy a steel building without first inspecting it! So as you look through different steel buildings, you should keep a mental checklist of the different characteristics that a building must possess before you give it your seal of approval. However, the intial thing you should take notice of is the condition of the building. It's alright if the building requires a few repairs here and there, but if the foundation looks as through it cannot withstand an earthquake or if it really is beyond renovation and repair, then you should probably look else where.

On Creating Greater Privacy and Efficient Use of Space

posted on 17 May 2011

One problem with my house is that the home is very open and so noise travels freely from one room to the other. I would like to enclose our den in a way that less noise enters the room, and then I would like to install several bookshelves in the room along with comfortable reading chairs. It would then become our family library. I have the tools to do such work myself - masonry saws and other saws, in fact a whole garage full of equipment - but I will need someone to help me! Additionally, I would like to enclose one of the slots in our garage to become our gym. Currently, the dog has free rain over the garage and the entire garage easily becomes filled with back yard equipment and other storage. I would like to enclose one area and put the gym equipment in there, that way it will be easier to work out without the disturbance of the dog and it will be easier to keep the area clean and free of clutter - thus making it easier to utilize the work-out equipment.

Untidy Streets Are So Upsetting To Me

posted on 27 April 2011

I do not understand why people think its okay to throw their trash on our streets. I live in a naturally beautiful area with streams and beautiful trees lining the streets. Lately I have noticed an increase in the amount of trash and rubbish being tossed into the streets and along the nature trails. Even the council's efforts - with their petrol pressure washers and whatnot - seems to make little difference. People are even dumping grocery carts in the streams. I try to pick up trash but it seems everyday there is more and more there. I do not understand why people think its someone elses job to keep our streets and neighborhoods clean. It is not that difficult to be responsible for your own trash. It brings down the neighborhoods image and property value.I have been very careful to teach my son not to create untidy streets and respect the environment we all live in.I only wish everybody would do their share. Our schools are focusing on being more environmentally conscious which is a good thing. I guess there are just some people out there that don't care what their environment is like. I think this is a reflection of their ignorance and laziness. Regardless it needs to stop and I wish they would raise the littering fines and enforce them all the way.
